About

"Icons on Ammo Boxes" is a powerful art project created by Kyiv‑based artists Sonya Atlantova, Oleksandr Klymenko, and Herman Klymenko, offering a striking artistic reflection on the Ukrainian–Russian war. At its heart lies a profound transformation: turning an object of death — an ammo box — into a symbol of life, expressed through the ancient tradition of Ukrainian icon painting.

Each icon is painted on a real ammunition box brought from the frontlines. These fragments of war become silent witnesses, carrying the physical and emotional weight of the conflict. By combining the harsh attributes of modern warfare with an artistic language rooted in the European Middle Ages, the project reframes today's war within a thousand years of Ukrainian and European history.

The icons transcend religious boundaries. They function not only as spiritual images but as cultural symbols accessible to all — in Ukraine, across Europe, and around the world.

This free exhibition invites viewers to witness how art can confront war, reclaim meaning, and restore humanity — even on the most unlikely of canvases.
