Acoustic music reframed through African rhythm, jazz and bluegrass

The Complications is a new acoustic quartet bringing together four distinctive voices from roots, jazz and world music.

Mandolin virtuoso Rex Preston and banjo innovator Leon Hunt draw on bluegrass and acoustic roots, while Duncan Kingston provides a supple, improvising jazz bass foundation. Senegalese percussionist Amadou Diagne adds the polyrhythmic language of West Africa.

Together, they reframe traditional and contemporary tunes through live interplay and improvisation. Banjo and mandolin intertwine as bass and percussion reshape the pulse, opening familiar melodies to unexpected connections between bluegrass, folk, jazz and West African traditions.

The result is acoustic music that is rhythmic, sophisticated and full of surprises: traditional material heard through contemporary ears and a truly global sense of rhythm.
